The Note that Made a Liar out of Me
Stephen M. Sullivan - August, 1998
I Always said that I would give up collecting when I finally purchased
a $1.00 Silver Certificate Series 1928E Star Note. This Note had alluded
me for years. There are only 3 Star Notes from this Series Known and I
patiently waited for one to be appear in an auction or price list.
One of the 3 finally came across the auction block a few years ago. Actually, it
was the finest known and sold for over $7,000.00. At that time, I could have been
a strong contender if the note had been in the $1,000.00 price range, so I cried
myself to sleep thinking that people are living a lot longer now and Maybe I will
find another one before my 100th birthday (I am 32 now, so I have some time.)
Last Year, The most beautiful 1928E Star Note that I have ever seen came across
the auction block. It is beautiful because (and only because) I was able to outbid
everyone else and give it a home. It should be considered rather ugly. About 10%
of it is burned and it would have graded FINE without the burns, BUT I LOVE IT!
This note made a liar out of me. I did buy it and I have not stopped collecting. If anything, my collecting interests have gotten stronger. :)
