Gold
Certificates

Gold Certificates were first issued issued in 1863 during the Civil War and were payable in Gold Coin or Specie.

In 1933, Congress passed the The Gold Reserve Act of 1933, required that ALL Gold Coin and Gold Certificates be redeemed and made possession of these coins and notes illegal. Although legal to own now, this act forced countless thousands to be redeemed and makes most Gold Certificates very rare collectables.

This type of note was issued in denominations of $10.00, $20.00, $50.00, $100.00, $500.00, $1000.00, $5000.00, $10,000.00 and $100,000.00 (although this denomination was only issued in Small Sized Gold Certificates.)
