$2.00 United States Notes (Legal Tenders)

Large Sized $2.00 Legal Tenders were issued for ten series: 1862, 1869, 1874, 1875, 1875A, 1875B, 1878, 1880, 1917.
There are eight distinct varieties (major differences with Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.
These notes are commonly called "Legal Tenders" because of their payment obligation stating "This Note is a Legal Tender.."

The Series 1862 $2.00 United States Notes represents the first Design Type of this class of notes. The Portrait at the left of the face is of Alexander Hamilton and the allegorical figure on the left represents "Freedom".

The Series 1869 $2.00 Legal Tenders represent a complete new design from the previous Series.
The Portrait at the left side of the face is Thomas Jefferson. The figure in the center of the face is the U.S Capital Building.
Because of the vivid colors and the blue tinted paper, this Series is refered to as the "Rainbow" series.

The face and back of Series 1875 $2.00 Legal Tenders are similar to notes of the previous series.
This Series of $2.00 United States notes was printed with a series designator similar to the $1.00 Notes of Series 1862. Instead of a numeric series, like the earlier releases,
these notes bore Alpha series designators. "Series A" was the first 1,000,000 notes printed, "Series B" was the second 1,000,000. After the first
2,000,000 notes were printed, the series dropped the Alpha designators and just "Series 1875" was printed.
