$5.00 United States Notes (Legal Tenders)
|
Large Sized $5.00 Legal Tenders were issued for six series: 1862, 1863, 1869, 1875, 1880, 1907.
There are eleven distinct varieties (major differences with Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.
These notes are commonly called "Legal Tenders" because of their payment obligation stating "This Note is a Legal Tender.."

The Series 1869 $5.00 Legal Tenders represent a complete new design from the previous Series.
The Portrait at the left side of the face is Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. The figure in the center of the face is a "Pioneer Family".
Because of the vivid colors and the blue tinted paper, this Series is refered to as the "Rainbow" series.
The Pioneer Family gives this type of note the nickname of "Wood Chopper".

 Series 1875 Back Design

The Faces of 1875 $5.00 Legal Tenders are similar to Series 1869 notes. The Backs represent a complete new design.
This Series of $5.00 United States notes was printed with a series designator similar to the $1.00 Notes of Series 1862. Instead of a numeric series, like the earlier releases,
these notes bore Alpha series designators. "Series A" was the first 1,000,000 notes printed, "Series B" was the second 1,000,000. After the first
2,000,000 notes were printed, the series dropped the Alpha designators and just "Series 1875" was printed.
