1st Charter Period


The first charter was from 1863 through 1882.

The First Charter $500 National Currency notes were the initial issue of National Currency and therefore represent a complete new design of the Face and Back. The vignette at the left of the face is "Spirit of the Navy." The vignette on the right of the face is the "Steamship Sirius arriivng in New York harbor in 1838". The vignette in the center of the Back is the "Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga on October 17, 1777".
