National Gold
Bank Notes

National Gold Bank Notes were a combination of National Currency and Gold Certificates. They were issued by a Chartered National Bank (although chartered with a special Gold Bank Charter) but were backed completely in Gold Coin that was deposited with the Treasury by the issuing bank. The Currency Act of 1870 authorized these notes and ten banks were chartered to issue these notes. Nine banks were in California and one was in Boston (Boston never issued its notes).
