$10.00 Silver Certificates
Large Sized $10.00 Silver Certificates were issued for five series: 1878, 1880, 1886, 1891 and 1908. There are ten distinct varieties (major differences with Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.

Series 1878 is the first Series of Silver Certificates. The portrait on the right side of the face is of Robert Morris. a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. All Series 1878 $10.00 Silver Certificates bear the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan and are countersigned by an Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer of the U.S.

The face and back of Series 1880 $10.00 Silver Certificates are very similar to Series 1878 notes. The First issues of Series 1880 Silver Certificates were countersigned like the 1878 Series but later issues within this series were not countersigned.

The Series 1886 $10.00 Silver Certificate represents a complete new design from the Series 1878 and 1880 Series. The Portrait in the Center is Thomas A. Hendricks, Vice-President under Grover Cleveland. Hendricks died in office. This fact, combined with the shape around his portrait has given this type of note the nickname "Tombstone Note.
