There are ten distinct varieties (major differences with Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.

Series 1878 is the first Series of Silver Certificates. The portrait on the right side of the face is of Robert Morris. a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. All Series 1878 $10.00 Silver Certificates bear the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan and
are countersigned by an Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer of the U.S.

The Portrait in the Center is Thomas A. Hendricks, Vice-President under Grover Cleveland. Hendricks died in office. This fact, combined with the shape around his portrait has given
this type of note the nickname "Tombstone Note.
