Series 1878 Back Design
Series 1878 is the first Series of Silver Certificates. The portrait on the left side of the face is of James Monroe. All Series 1878 $100.00 Silver Certificates bear the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan and
are countersigned by an Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer of the U.S.
Series 1878 - Countersigned - Overprinted with Large Red Seal at center and the number "100" printed in Red under the seal.
The face design of Series 1891 $100.00 Silver Certificates is very similar in appearance to that of the previous Series.
The back represents a complete new design.
