Large Sized $2.00 Silver Certificates were issued for four series: 1886, 1891, 1896 and 1899.

There are six distinct varieties (major differences with Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.

Series 1886 is the first Series of $2.00 Silver Certificates. The portrait on the left side of the face is of General Winfield Scott Hancock, a Civil War Union General.

The Series 1896 $2.00 Silver Certificates represents a complete new design from the Series 1886 and 1891 Series. The Face Design is an allegory figure representing "Science presenting steam and electricity to commerce and manufacturing.". The portraits on the back are Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse on the right. Both men were American inventors.

This note is part of the "Educational Series" of 1896, along with the $2.00 and $5.00 Silver Certificates of the same series.
