Series 1878 is the first Series of Silver Certificates. The portrait on the right side of the face is of Stephen Decatur. All Series 1878 $20.00 Silver Certificates bear the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan and
are countersigned by an Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer of the U.S.
Series 1878 - Countersigned - Overprinted with Large Red Seal at center and the word "TWENTY" printed in Red under the seal.

The First issues of Series 1880 Silver Certificates
were countersigned like the 1878 Series but later issues within this series were not countersigned.
Series 1880 - Countersigned - Overprinted with Large Brown Seal at center and a brown "XX" under the seal.
The faces and backs of Series 1886 $20.00 Silver Certificate represent a complete new design from the previous Series.
