Large Sized $5.00 Silver Certificates were issued for five series: 1886, 1891, 1896, 1899 and 1923.

There are eight distinct varieties (differences with face Design, Seal type and / or back design) within this denomination.

Series 1886 is the first Series of $5.00 Silver Certificates. The portrait on the right side of the face is of Ulysses S. Grant.

Because there are 5 Silver Dollars depicted on the back, this type of notes is often referred to as the "Silver Dollar Back".

The Face Design is an allegory figure representing "Electricity as the Dominant Force in the World". The portraits on the back are Ulysses S. Grant, on the left and Philip Sheridan, a Civil War Union general, on the right.

This note is part of the "Educational Series" of 1896, along with the $1.00 and $2.00 Silver Certificates of the same series.
