Series 1878 is the first Series of $500.00 Silver Certificates. The portrait on the right side of the face is of Charles Sumner, a United States Senator. All Series 1878 $500.00 Silver Certificates bear the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan and are countersigned by an Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer of the U.S.
