MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATES
Problems often arose with the use of US currency on Military Bases overseas. The potential capture of the Hawaiian
Islands by Japan gave birth to the first issue of special currency that could be easily demonitized in order to protect the US
economy. These notes had the words HAWAII printed on both the face and the back. Notes issued for the Invasion of North Africa had a Yellow Seal instead of the standard blue seal on Silver certificates of that period.
In 1946, actual Military Payment Certificates (MPC)
were issued to US soldiers instead of regular currency. This Scrip would not find its way to the Black Market or be given in exchange for stolen military property or other illicit sources.
