Lucius E. Chittenden
He was the first Register of the Treasury to be able to put
his signature on our money, during the Civil War, of course. What few
references to him we can find seem to refer to him as the "Honorable Lucius
E. Chittenden," and since we can find reference to his having written a case
law book, we may guess that he served as a judge.
Perhaps the most tantalizing clue about this man's life is that he seems to
have been a writer. One of his works, An Unknown
Heroine: An Historical Episode of the War Between the States comes
up prominently.
