Carter Glass
Another journalist turned congressman, Carter Glass started his career working in the newspaper industry and ended his career serving in the United States Senate. In between those two jobs, he also served in the Virginia State Senate, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives.
After sixteen years of service in the House of Representatives, he was appointed to the post of Secretary of the Treasury by Woodrow Wilson, where he served for two years before being elected to the Senate. He turned down a second appointment as Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin Roosevelt.
Being the Secretary of the Treasury under Wilson meant that Glass played a significant role in the creation of the Federal Reserve System. He strongly favored making the Federal Reserve System a decentralized system, rather than allowing control by a single central bank.
