William Alexander Julian

William Julian has the distinction of being perhaps the last man appointed to the post of Treasurer of the United States. All Treasurers since Julian have been women.

Professor Bill Parker, provides the following details on his second cousin, Mr. W. A. Julian, which he says he obtained from his cousin, a Ms. Gladys M. Tate.

Graduated Dodds College, Frankfort, Ky in 1888. He engaged in the shoe manufacturing business in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1893 as a partner with Franklin Alter and H. Kokenge in the Alter-Julian Co. This company was succeeded in 1906 by the Julian-Kokenge Co. which is still in business in Columbus OH. Mr. Julian was president of the company until 1917 when he retired from its active management. During the world war he was chairman of the civilian relief committee of the American Red Cross. He was a delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1916. In May 1933, he was appointed treasurer of the United States by President Roosevelt. He was US Treasurer from 1933 until his death on May 29, 1949, in an automobile accident in Bethesda, Maryland.
