William Gibbs McAdoo

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.
-William G. McAdoo

Mr. McAdoo will probably be best remembered by New Yorkers for the instrumental part he played in the construction of subway tunnels beneath the Hudson River. When the tunnels were opened, he was the president of the Hudson and Mahattan Railroad. Later, he served under Woodrow Wilson as Secretary of the Treasury and as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board - not surprising given that he was Wilson's son-in-law.

McAdoo later attempted to get the Democratic nomination for President in 1920 and 1924, eventually settling on serving a term as US Senator from California.

Secretary of the Treasury from 03/06/1913 through 12/15/1918
