Small Sized $500.00 Federal Reserve Notes were issued for three Series: 1928, 1934 and 1934A. There are two distinct varieties (major differences with Series, Face Design, Seal Type and / or Back Design) within this denomination.

The Series 1928 $500.00 Federal Reserve Notes represent the first Design Type of this class of notes. The Portrait in the center of the face is William McKinley. The Obligation states "REDEEMABLE IN GOLD ON DEMAND AT THE UNITED STATES TREASURY OR IN GOLD OR LAWFUL MONEY AT ANY FEDERAL RESERVE BANK."

The Obligation has been changed to state "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, AND IS REDEEMABLE IN LAWFUL MONEY AT THE UNITED STATES TREASURY, OR AT ANY FEDERAL RESERVE BANK."
