United States Notes
(Legal Tenders)

United States Notes were first issued in 1862. They were issued under the Congressional Act of July 11, 1862.

Modern or Small Sized United States Notes were first issued for Series 1928. They were issued in denominations of $1.00, $2.00, $5.00 and $100.00. Specimens of the $10.00 and $20.00 denominations were displayed in the 1933 Worlds Fair, but were never released into circulation.

These notes are commonly called "Legal Tenders" because of their payment obligation stating "This Note is a Legal Tender.."
