Lucy Pickens

John C. Calhoun

(March 18, 1782 - March 31, 1850)

John Caldwell Calhoun was born in Abbeville district, South Carolina. He graduated from Yale in 1804 and started his career as a lawyer. He was a member of the South Carolina state legislature (1809-1811), and was elected to Congress (1811). He was Secretary of War under President Monroe. He was Vice President under John Quincy Adams (1824-1828) and under Andrew Jackson (1828-1832). He resigned from the office of Vice President to enter the Senate (1832).
