In 1815, Captain Stephen Decatur attacked Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli and made their governments promise not to support piracy against the US anymore. Despite this promise, the piracy continued.

Decatur went on to be promoted to Commodore. He was later killed in a duel by another officer.
