James Abram Garfield

James A. Garfield

(November 19, 1831 - September 19, 1881)

James Abram Garfield was born in Hiram, Ohio. He started his career as a lawyer. He was a member of the Ohio State Senate from 1859 through 1861. He was a General in the Union army during the Civil war. He was a U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1863 through 1881 and was elected President of the United States in 1881. James Garfield was assassinated and died while in office.
