John J. Knox

(March 19, 1828 - February 9, 1892)

John Jay Knox was born in Knoxboro, New York. He was a private banker from 1857 through 1862. He wrote a paper for "Hunt's Merchant's Magazine" advocating a National banking system. This paper attracted the attention of Secretary Chase and Mr. Knox was given government employment ranging from being in charge of the mint and coinage correspondence of the Treasury Department, Deputy Comptroller of the Currency, and the Comptroller of Currency from 1872-1884.

He wrote United States Notes; A History of the Various Issues of Paper Money by the Government of the United States (1884) and History of Banking in the United States (1900).
