William L. Marcy

(December 12, 1786 - July 4, 1857)

William Learned Marcy was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts. He started his career as a lawyer. He was a U.S. Senator from New York from 1831 through 1833. He was Governor of New York from 1833 through 1839. He served as Secretary of War under President Polk from 1845 through 1849 and as Secretary of State under President Pierce from 1853 through 1857.
