Clement Claiborne Clay

C.G. Memminger

(January 17, 1803 - March 7, 1888)

Christopher Gustavus Memminger was born in Württemberg, Germany. His family moved to South Carolina when he was still a child. After the death his his mother, he was adopted by Thomas Bennett (later Governor of South Carolina). He started his career as a lawyer. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed the Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederacy (1861-1864). He resigned in 1864 and was blamed for the collapse of the Confederate credit.
