George W. Randoph

(March 10, 1818 - April 3, 1867)

George Wythe Randolph was born in Charlottesville, Virgina. He started his career in the Navy and then became a lawyer. He was commissioned a Major in the Confederate Army but quickly became a Brigadier General. He was appointed to the position of Secretary of war for the Confederacy (1862) but resigned after ony 8 months because of conflicts with Confederacy President Jefferson Davis.

Trivia:

George Randolph's mother was Martha Jefferson Randolph, daughter of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. George Was born in Monticello, the Jefferson family estate.
