Winfield Scott

(June 13, 1786 - May 29, 1866)

Winfield Scott was born near Petersburg, Virginia. Although he was a Virginian, he refused to join the Rebel forces and fought the Civil War on the union side. He had an impressive military career. He was considered a hero in the War of 1812, commanded forces in the Mexican War and served as General-in-Chief of the Army from 1841 through 1848 and from 1855 through 1861.

He was an unsuccessful Whig presidential candidate in 1852.
