Alexander Stephens

(February 11, 1812 - March 4, 1883)

Alexander Hamilton Stephens was born near Crawfordsville, Georgia. He started his carerr as a lawyer. He was elected to the Georgia state legislature (1836-1841), elected to the state Senate (1842-1843) and elected to Congress (1843-1859). The Provisional Congress of the Confederacy elected him Vice President of the Confederate States. After the Civil War he was imprisoned for five months and was elected to the U.S. Senate (1866) but denied a seat because Georgia was still being viewed as a State outsie of the Union during the early reconstruction era. He was eventually elected to Congress, He became the governor of Georgia (1882-1883) where he served until jis death.
