John Sherman

General
William T. Sherman

(February 8, 1820 - February 14, 1891)

William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1840. He was Major general of the California Militia during the Mexican War. After the Mexican War he was a lawyer and a banker before joining the Union Army at the onset of the Civil War as a Colonel. He was quickly promoted to Brigadier General. Sherman's "march to the sea" effectively split the Confederacy and made the end of the war inevidable. After Grant was elected to the Presidency, Sherman was given command of the entire U.S. army until he retired in 1883.
